Job Summary

The Trauma Performance Improvement & Patient Safety (PIPS) Coordinator RN monitors and evaluates the care of the critically injured patient from time of injury through the continuum of care to ensure that care is safe, effective, patient centered, timely, efficient and equitable. Works under the direction of the Trauma Medical Director and the Trauma Program Manager.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Leads and manages systemic and coordinated approach to quality measurement and improvement initiatives that impact core clinical processes and critical patient care functions.
  • Follows the NYS regulations related to trauma and the American College of Surgeons Care of the Injured Patient guidelines and standards.
  • Addresses institution specific improvement needs including:
    • The creation and maintenance of PIPS documents including master tracker and patient review forms.
    • Organizes and follows through on tasks associated with PIPS loop closure.
    • Leads weekly working PIPS meetings with agenda circulated prior to the meetings.
    • Creates clinical care timelines as a component of patient care review.
    • Facilitates and documents loop closure.
    • Facilitates PIPS related education.
    • Develops quality filters, audits and case reviews.
    • Identifies trends and sentinel events.
    • Identifies events, collaboratively develops corrective action plans, and provides monitoring and reevaluation.
    • Conducts primary reviews of cases and participates in subsequent levels of review.
    • Leads trauma manual guideline review, revisions, and subsequent levels of review.
    • Introduces new protocols and procedures.
    • Assists work groups with content support.
  • Collaborates and assists the Trauma Program Manager with state and national (American College of Surgeons) trauma center site visit pre and post visit submission documents as they relate to PIPS.
  • Collaborates with Trauma Registrar/Registrar Contractors.
  • Prepares the agenda and presentation and reviews quality data monthly.
  • Participates in injury prevention education and outreach activities.
  • Participates in trauma service rounds regularly for the purpose of PIPS activities and complication tracking.
  • Perform other duties as required.

     

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • BSN
  • Emergency Department or critical care experience.
  • 2 years of Emergency Department/critical care nursing including quality or process improvement experience

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to establish productive relationships with a wide variety of health care professionals.
  • Capable of interacting with all levels of staff.
  • Able to track data, analyze and interpret numbers.
  • Make recommendations based on data synthesis in a clear and logical representation to management and peers.
  • Ability to manage challenging situations and have crucial conversations for the purpose of reaching consensus, maintain accountability, and consistency among health care professionals and stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel to state and national conferences and within the local area.
  • Highly proficient with Excel and MS Office, with the ability to learn new software.

     

PREFERRED:

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing.



 

Licensure/Certification Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Registered Nurse license in New York State.

PREFERRED:

  • TNCC/ATCN certification.
