Applications are being accepted for the position of Library Assistant Iwith the City of South San Francisco. This is a non-benefited, part-time/hourly position. 

This recruitment will be used to fill positions at the Main Library and the Grand Avenue Branch Library.

Hourly Rate:$29.53 - $35.90 per hour

Work Hours:Hours may vary. The Library is open seven days a week, sometimes until 8:00 p.m. Candidates must be willing to work evenings and weekends/holidays.

DEPARTMENT:

The Library department is comprised of three service areas: The Main Library, Grand Avenue Branch, and Literacy Services at Project Read and Community Learning Center. The Library department is actively committed to providing the best possible combination of library materials and services to meet the informational, educational and recreational needs of our multicultural community, in a professional manner, with a human touch.

POSITION:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of clerical, technical, and paraprofessional duties in acquisitions, cataloging, classification, circulation, patron services, reference, and literacy services; assignments may entail substantial amounts of data entry and retrieval, technical assistance to patrons with printing, use of the public computers and MakerSpace equipment; incumbents may direct the work of part-time and volunteer staff; leading and supporting programs.

They are skilled in standard office procedures, comfortable with library technology, and able to perform a range of clerical and technical tasks accurately and efficiently.

 

The ideal Library Assistant I candidate communicates clearly, follow directions well, and adapts easily to changing service needs. With a proactive approach to problem-solving and a collaborative mindset, they maintain positive relationships with patrons, coworkers, and community partners. Integrity, confidentiality, and commitment to service excellence are key.

 

Fluency in a second language is highly desirable for some positions.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES: (may include but are not limited to the following):

  • Performs a variety of service desk functions, including patron account management, checking in/out materials, assisting with self-check equipment, processing payments and reserves, and responding to patron inquiries.
  • Assists patrons in locating and using library materials and equipment; explains library services, policies, and procedures; answers basic reference questions using online catalogs, indexes, and other bibliographic tools.
  • Orders, receives, and processes library materials in all formats; maintains accurate acquisition and inventory records.
  • Develops, presents, and/or supports library programs, community outreach activities, and informational displays.
  • Performs general clerical tasks such as monitoring supplies, processing mail, handling payments, maintaining records, and managing files.
  • Opens and/or closes the library facility following established procedures.
  • May train, schedule, and oversee the work of part-time and volunteer staff.
  • Supports the delivery of educational programs for adults and/or children, including tutoring, homework help, story time, and instructional programming.
  • Assists in conducting assessments to track participant progress and program effectiveness.
  • Acts as a liaison with program participants, community groups, and educational agencies to support service coordination.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: One year of clerical or paraprofessional experience, preferably in a library, literacy, or educational setting.

Training: Equivalent to graduation from high school.
